Find DPS&C Local-Jail Releases

To find someone released from Louisiana DPS&C local-jail custody in Ascension Parish, check both the local housing record and the state sentence record. A state-sentenced person can remain in a sheriff-run jail while legally committed to Louisiana corrections. The parish record shows booking, housing, and local movement. The state system controls the sentence calculation, projected date, institutional assignment, and supervision path. A move out of Ascension Parish can be a transfer rather than community release, so both records must be joined before local departure is treated as state discharge.

DPS&C Local Release Paths

Louisiana uses local jails to house some people serving state sentences. Physical placement and legal custody can therefore have different owners. In Ascension Parish, APSO can document a person's local housing and movement while Louisiana DPS&C controls sentence computation. A person may stay at the parish jail, move to another local jail, enter a state institution, or leave confinement under a state release framework.

A move from Ascension Parish Jail to a state reception or correctional institution continues custody. It is not release to the community. A true prison release may begin parole, diminution-of-sentence status, probation tied to a split sentence, or another legal obligation. Discharge means the relevant state status ended, which can occur later than physical release. Read the state status and effective date rather than assuming that departure from one building ended the sentence.

Two records matter. APSO answers where local custody changed; DPS&C answers what happened to the state sentence.

Confirm DPS&C Local Release

Begin with the APSO Inmate Search to identify the local booking and housing. Search both Ascension Parish Jail and Off Site Housing. Then use Louisiana's LAVNS or VINELink route for the state status. DPS&C says its LAVNS data updates every 24 hours and covers people in prison plus people under probation or parole supervision. This makes it useful after a gate release, but it is not proof of a specific local exit time.

  1. Match the APSO booking and note the actual local movement or release entry.
  2. Search Louisiana in LAVNS or VINELink with the best identifiers available.
  3. Read institution, custody, and community-supervision labels literally.
  4. Call 225-383-4580 with a DPS&C number or name and date of birth.
  5. Ask for assignment, projected date when applicable, and the assigned P&P district.
  6. Confirm an actual release with state records rather than a parish-roster absence.

The Ascension Parish released-inmate search and records guide covers other county and federal paths. For a state-sentenced person, a shift from an institution to community supervision supports release from incarceration but not final discharge. A no-result message is inconclusive. Use the phone locator, facility Records Office, or Donaldsonville Probation and Parole District to resolve it.

Note: The state update cycle does not control the separate APSO inquiry, which publishes no fixed refresh promise.

DPS&C Custody Contacts

No separate state institution in Ascension Parish owns this category. Contact APSO for physical local-jail movement and DPS&C for sentence status. The automated locator can return housing assignment, facility contact, projected release date when applicable, and the assigned probation and parole district. Time-computation information has a separate line. Callers should use the person's DPS&C number when possible.

The Donaldsonville Probation and Parole District at 10115 Frontage Road, St. James, LA 70086 serves Ascension Parish and neighboring parishes. Its phone is 225-474-2020, with published weekday hours from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. A district assignment can support community supervision after release. It does not mean all sentence duties ended.

Request DPS&C Release Records

The records route depends on the fact being proved. For local movement, APSO requires written public-record requests by USPS at Ascension Parish Sheriff's Office Headquarters, 828 South Irma Boulevard, Gonzales, LA 70737, Attn: Deputy Kyle Gautreau, Legal Affairs. For the state calculation, the incarcerated person receives a Master Prison Record after computation. A person in a state facility directs written questions to that facility's Records Office. A state prisoner housed locally uses the Administrative Remedy Process.

Requested fieldWhy it matters
APSO movement lineShows when local physical housing changed.
Receiving institutionDistinguishes transfer from community release.
Master Prison RecordShows the completed state sentence calculation.
Release certificate or statusDocuments the effective state release framework.
P&P assignmentIdentifies community supervision after confinement.

APSO's posted local fees apply only to records it produces: $1 per document page, $5 per photograph page, and $1 per audio or video minute plus $10 per disc. State records follow DPS&C procedures and lawful limits. A third party seeking public fields should use the state public-information route. Keep the request focused on discharge date, status, assignment, and other public sentence facts rather than protected case material.

DPS&C Release Date Fields

DPS&C does not publish a simple Ascension Parish discharged-inmate list. Its official person-locator path uses LAVNS or VINELink, the automated locator, and the Master Prison Record. The public system can follow a person from prison into probation or parole supervision. The phone locator can supply assignment and a projected date when the calculation exists.

Projected release is not actual release. DPS&C may lack a date until official sentencing papers arrive and staff complete the calculation. Time-served allowances, concurrent or consecutive terms, offense-date law, statutory exclusions, program-based reductions, forfeiture, detainers, and later court orders can all change it. The Master Prison Record is stronger because it preserves more of that computation.

Do not subtract a generic percentage from a sentence. For qualifying felony offenses committed on or after August 1, 2024, ordinary good-time diminution under R.S. 15:571.3.1 can reach a maximum of 15 percent, subject to exclusions and earning rules. Older offenses follow other categories. Even physical release by diminution can leave a legal remainder rather than produce final sentence discharge.

Ascension Local-Jail Context

Ascension Parish has no state-operated adult prison listed in the official directory, yet state custody remains part of the local jail story. APSO reports that its jail has operated since 1976. A 2022 report described an average of more than 400 incarcerated people and more than 70 corrections officers, and the current Corrections page states capacity above 500 beds. Those figures describe the parish facility, not the number of state prisoners or releases.

1976Reported start of jail operations
500+Current stated bed capacity
70+Historical corrections staffing

The APSO Corrections Division page identifies the facility's jail and release functions.

The official page is the better place to check live jail contact and release-procedure wording because copied details can age. Historic population and staffing figures should never be used to estimate who left custody on a given day.

DPS&C Transfer Versus Release

When DPS&C moves a person from Ascension Parish Jail into a state institution, the APSO booking may show an exit even though state incarceration continues. Men entering institutions are usually processed through the reception function at Elayn Hunt Correctional Center before permanent placement, while women follow the state women's reception path. The state locator should be checked after the record updates.

A later shift to community supervision carries different meaning. Parole is conditional release before sentence expiration. Probation is a court-ordered community status and may not follow imprisonment in the same case. Diminution can end confinement while leaving a statutory remainder. Final discharge must be confirmed from the controlling state record. Follow the sentence owner through each step, even when the person's physical location began in Ascension Parish.

Louisiana's statewide victim-notification path is another access channel. LAVNS or VINELink can show custody and supervision information, while the automated phone locator provides assignment and date information tied to DPS&C records. A person under community supervision may still appear after leaving a jail or prison. That result supports a change in physical custody, but it does not prove sentence expiration. Contact the assigned district for clarification when the public label is broad.

A court docket also remains relevant. DPS&C may be unable to calculate a date until it receives complete sentencing paperwork. Amended sentences, additional cases, or detainers can alter the path after a local jail record appears settled. The 23rd Judicial District Court record can explain the sentence imposed, while the Master Prison Record shows how the state applied it. Neither should be replaced with an informal calculation based only on the announced term.

When sources conflict, record who supplied each fact and when. An APSO detail may accurately show departure from the parish jail on one date, while DPS&C accurately shows arrival at a state site. Those facts can coexist. A later LAVNS supervision label may then show release from confinement. Building the sequence prevents a local transfer date from being mislabeled as the state release date.
